How it works

  • Ideal transfer time = File size (bit) ÷ Link speed per second (bit/s); Adjusted transfer time = Ideal transfer time ÷ Achieved throughput fraction (0–1)
  • Worked example: 1 GB × 8 / (100 Mb/s) = 80 s; 80/0.8 = 100 s
  • Supported input limits: File size: 0 ≤ x ≤ 1000000000000; Link speed per second: 1e-12 ≤ x ≤ 1000000000000; Achieved throughput fraction (0–1): 1e-9 ≤ x ≤ 1

Assumptions and limitations

Decimal SI prefixes use powers of 1000; binary IEC prefixes use 1024. One byte is eight bits. Transfer estimates assume constant throughput; video uses average bitrates and explicit overhead. Screen calculations assume square pixels. Printing preserves aspect ratio through fit or crop; image PPI is distinct from printer DPI. Exact storage ratios are retained; nonterminating decimal displays round to twelve places.
