Photography depth of field
Find near and far focus limits and hyperfocal distance from your lens and viewing criterion. Drag the graph handles to change inputs and explore the result.
Your inputs
The editable example is illustrative. Enter your own dimensions, operating data, prices, and fees. Results update as you edit.
Calculations run in your browser. Inputs are not saved or sent to analytics.
How it works
- A = f² / ( × ); H = A + ; Dₙ = A × / (A + − ); D_f = A × / (H − ), < H

Assumptions and limitations
Uses an ideal thin lens and distances from its principal plane. Sensor profiles are approximate circle-of-confusion criteria; choose custom for your output size and viewing needs. Diffraction, lens aberrations and focus breathing are excluded. Example: 50 mm, f/8, 5 m and 0.03 mm confusion give near 3.389 m, far 9.527 m and hyperfocal 10.467 m.
